The International Competition Team at William & Mary Law School was restarted two years ago after stopping in 2013. International Competition Team was restarted because there was a growing interest in international law, but limited options to grow our skills and make international connections.
Last year, we participated in five international competitions (Jessup Moot Court, ICC Moot Court, Jean Pictet, Stetson, and Clara Barton) and are competing at four out of the five again this year.
Through the International Competition Team, we have been able to learn interesting niche areas of international law while practicing our oral advocacy and written advocacy skills.
While the law school (the Dean’s Funds) and our received Student Bar Association funding will cover our expenses for initial rounds of competitions, they do not help us financially with advanced rounds. Meaning, if we advance to international rounds for our Jessup and ICC Moot Court competitions this year, it is almost entirely up to team fundraising to fund our travel, accommodations and expenses. Last year, we advanced to internationals at all three of the competitions that have advanced rounds (Jessup, ICC and Stetson Environmental (the last of which we are not competing in this year)).
Our goal is to send our two moot court competition teams to their advanced rounds this year with registration fees and travel expenses. ICC moot court international rounds will be held in The Hague, Netherlands and Jessup in Washington DC.
This competition not only enriches the law students’ education while in school and gives them a unique experience but highlights the successes of William & Mary.
