My honors thesis will investigate how parental responses to youth emotional expressivity may serve as a protective factor for mental health concerns in later adolescence. Employing a unique longitudinal design that includes both adolescents and their parents, this research aims to understand ways in which positive parenting, particularly supporting the teenager's expressions of anger and sadness, may prevent debilitating anxiety and depression in high school and college.

All William & Mary Honors Fellowships fundraising supports the Charles Center Honors Fellowships Fund. Direct support for individual undergraduate research projects is distributed by the Roy R. Charles Center for Academic Excellence.

Hi all,

Thank you so much for your donations, support, words of encouragement, and anything and everything else you have done to encourage my honors thesis. I have been blown away these past few weeks by all the kindness and support. I really appreciate you willingness to contribute.

This thesis is extraordinarily special to me, and it really will be a great capstone to my college experience. I feel so passionately about improving mental health concerns of young adults and adolescents, and getting the opportunity to conduct research on parent and child emotional development and psychopathology is absolutely a dream come true.
