Title: Defining the methylome of Helicobacter pylori under acid stress; a study on H. pylori gene regulation, the role of ArsRS, and the sociological and ethical components of research into this realm

Project Description:

My thesis consists of interdisciplinary research on the bacteria Helicobacter pylori— a leading cause of Peptic Ulcer Disease and stomach cancer, primarily affecting developing countries. H. pylori infection severity is dependent on genetic diversity between strains, yet most research currently conducted is in strains from 1st world countries. My thesis has two goals; one, map epigenetic changes using H. pylori mutants with and without acid sensing capability, to evaluate such ability’s role in determining infection severity. Two, to analyze biases in similar research, helping guide development of more equitable treatment for the over 3 billion people affected by H. pylori.
