Title: How Asian Americans Index Their Asian Identity In Interaction
Project Description:
I intend to research how Asian Americans construct their Asian identity through language and interaction. This question is exacerbated by real-world events and circumstances—specifically, the COVID-19 pandemic and the rise of anti-Asian hate. The significance of this research lays in the growing public discussion of what it means to be Asian American. In linguistics, there is the idea that identity construction is an active and continual process and one that can be distinguished through everyday discourse. My research will examine how Asian Americans themselves self-identify, rather than have the label of “Asian” being imposed on them by non-Asian people.
