My research project involves attempting to integrate a species of single-cellular algae, called a diatom, into a solar panel. The diatom's cell wall, called a frustule, is made out of silicon. Silicon is also the most expensive material used in the production of Solar Cells. This fact, in addition to the frustules unique optical properties which allow it to capture light, mean that it could increase the solar panels efficiency, without increasing the cost of production.
