Title: Geochronology of Iapetan meta-igneous rocks, central VA
Project Description:
This research aims to determine if mapped rocks in this Simeon quadrangle study site are igneous. If these rocks are igneous as determined by field work and laboratory studies, then the goal is to accurately determine their age. This age will tell us what formations they are a part of, and more significantly, when the ancient Iapetus Ocean opened. There is not yet a specific age that scientists are confident in for this opening, so this research will be imperative to the greater understanding of the geologic history of Virginia, which was overlain by this ancient ocean.
