About

At a Lemon’s Legacies Porch Talk in October 2018, several undergraduate students expressed interest in being part of the Lemon Project, a multifaceted and dynamic attempt to rectify wrongs against African Americans by William & Mary through action or inaction, in a meaningful and continued way. From that conversation, the Lemon Project team decided to start a student volunteer group, called the Lemon Project Society (LPS), to support our efforts towards reconciliation. The Lemon Project had its origins in the activism of W&M undergraduates in 2007, and we have long wanted to find a sustainable way for students to play an active and meaningful role in our work. Through volunteering with the Lemon Project in an official capacity, students will have academic opportunities to build skills in community engagement, public speaking and public history, team building, networking, and digital curation. LPS members must undergo an application process, and they will support the Lemon Project’s efforts to rectify wrongs perpetrated against African Americans by William & Mary and to build bridges between the university, Williamsburg, and the Greater Tidewater area. The LPS will also facilitate academic and extracurricular opportunities for students.

Tribefunding will help us fundraise to provide the LPS with an operating budget for 2019-2020 and beyond. Since this is a brand new initiative, there is no room within the current Lemon Project budget to fund it. Fundraising this budget will allow us to hold orientation and training events and provide the students with tokens for their service in the forms of pins and a graduation medallion.
