Title: A World Half Created: The Imaginative Powers of Sound in the Poetry of William Wordsworth
Project Description:
My research centers on the following works of British Romantic poet William Wordsworth: Lyrical Ballads (1800), The Prelude (1805), and Poems, in Two Volumes (1807). I will explore Wordsworth’s fascination with poetic musicality—the way in which poetry uses sound—and its effect upon the active imagination of its listeners. Rather than limiting conceptions of musicality to song and instrumentation, my project investigates how the power of sound can be extended to the realm of literature, through techniques such as aural imagery and language, in order to understand Wordsworth’s conception of a world “half creat[ed]” (“Tintern Abbey” l. 107).
